Alisha Chinai, the undisputed Queen of Indipop, and the dil ki rani of many a fan. Alisha entered the Indian music scene at a time when Indipop was an unknown concept. Her earlier albums include Babydoll, Jadoo, Aa-Alisha, and of course, Made In India which became the highest selling Indipop album. In fact, Alisha came to be recognised as the pioneer of Indipop. |

(English pop- Maddona - Made in India version )
Alisha followed up these albums with Om - the inner voice and, more recently, Dil Ki Rani. This album also sees the return of the Made In India team of Alisha and Biddu (of Disco Deewane`-Nazia Hussain fame team early 80's) .
Together they weave magic around each of Dil Ki Rani’s eight songs that are stylistically different, but remain true to the pop genre. Reflecting on her past successes, Alisha says, “With the mammoth success of Made In India, I knew I had crossed boundaries. And with Dil Ki Rani, I hope to recreate the same magical effect."
She further quips that "the album put India on the world map. Now you have songs like Made in UAE, Made in Malaysia...!"
Alisha’s love affair with music goes back a long way – her father was a classical singer. But her interests go far beyond music – Alisha has dabbled in everything from modelling to theatre.
She has even worked with adman and theatre personality Alyque Padamsee in Evita. But it was with Jadoo that Alisha staked her claim on the music scene.
The album earned platinum, and Alisha had arrived with a bang. And that was just the beginning – she followed up her magical touch in Jadoo with more platinum albums like Aah Alisha, Baby Doll, Madonna and Kamasutra.
Alisha has taken success and failure in her stride, and has sailed through controversies – there was the infamous incident of her accusing Anu Malik of attempted molestation.
Later, Magnasound, which had released her album, Bombay Girl, filed a lawsuit against her for defamation – Alisha had accused the company of cheating her on royalty.
As if to make matters worse, her last two albums did not exactly set the music scene buzzing or the cash registers ringing. But be sure that Alisha is here to stay. The Baby Doll has grown up to become a Dil ki Rani.
Alisha has had a prolific playback singing career too. She started with the 1985 film Tarzan and provided notable vocals for Tridev and the sizzling Kaate nahin kat te from Mr India. Her most recent offerings are Karobaar and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya.... The latter film showcases Alisha's versatility, as she has sung a truly noteworthy number for Sandeep Chowta. The composer is also scoring music for her next album. We sure hope she is back in the reckoning with these efforts!
