I have read some of his novels - I read my first Sidney in Class 11 , after I gave my 10th class boards, my sister had read Irving Wallace's "The Second Lady" and had been hiding such books from me..censoring it from me - as she thought I was too young to get initiated into such books where SEX was described in such gory details. Anyways I first read The naked Face - about a young black girl brought home by a man - nothing gory happened there...just that the Lady who had been confessing to the Doctor - fell in love with him and so did the doctor ..but loo behold she was an under-world Don's wife and the don thought that she is divulging all his gory secrets to the doctor and they all ransack his clinic !!....there was a similar case here in Bollywood - This Divya Bharti dame - a chubby cheek lass who ruled the hearts of Indian men by showing her vital STATISTICS got murdered by the dons...or so is the rumors..anyways . I then read Other side of Midnight and the Stranger in the Mirror and my interpretation of these stories are as follows that I uploaded in www.mouthshut.com.... This side of broad day-light May I sing a song : “Jaane’ man – 2, palat teri nazar – vaha to raat hai , savera hai idhar” which means turn around dear one – towards broad daylight !(ref. Movie KAho na pyaar hai) I was in class nine at that point of time – my first Sidney was “stranger in the mirror” …or was it “Other side of Midnight” – I do not quite remember actually. I read about this character Toby , his parents being poor , buther father, fatso, overpowering & dominating mother – who , when decided to have a child, forced on her husband ! – and so was born Toby !(and I always thought that only men indulge in such gory things ) He was famous for his size ! for the first time I came to know that such things are discussed among males and …. females – had just gotten out of Nancy Drews and Hardy Boys actually, Ms Maple and Hercule Poirot…anyways , it was definitely a rude shock ! 2 parallel stories were running – about a girl who was ditched in love , by her lover who had left her after making her pregnant – she was so vindictive and angry about it that she let the zygote…feotus fertilized by her lover, grow till some 6 months or so and then she straightened a hanger, immersed herself in a bath tub and self aborted her self !!! OH!GOSH !! I could’nt sleep for days after reading that I remember ! time and again I was picturising the scene and could actually feel her pain ! gosh – such utter hatred !!- but I failed to understand why should she pain herself !! – she later becomes an actress and in spite of achieving name & fame , could not still forget or forgive her lover and often used to think how he must be reacting when he must be seeing her on screen ! poor girl – she truly loved him ! In the mean while Toby grew up to be a comedian and is a smash hit – he also becomes famous. He had to get married to a fat , bloated sister of an underworld don under pressure ! he used to shut his eyes tightly , fantasize about some great model , get aroused and then only he could make love to his wife !- well another facet of men was revealed to me here through old old Sidney ! – and no wonder why these Model girls are so famous and sort after ! – if it had’nt been for them…our world order would have come to an end by now !!...is’nt it men? And when this Toby’s fatso, ugly wife died while child birth, Toby was happy !! so men are actually happy when ugly wives die…..no wonder there are so many jokes on WIFE being – the Worst Investment For Ever ! very true indeed ! – the reason why girls are speedily becoming “Single ready to mingle” – like Parveen Babi – a muslim “Purdahanasheen girl”(under veil) – went ahead to have a fast life – on her death – there was no one to take care of her dead body !...and TV channels were showing reluctant Kabir Bedi , father of Pooja Bedi, lamenting about the death of his ”once upon a time” live together comrade!! – gosh ! what a SICK life style !! and people are dying to become Indian Idols !! who is selecting them? – Loser Judges !! Anyways, famous Toby meets ditched actress and they get married. Toby suffers from paralysis – actress brings him back to health – by absolutely sick methods – SICK – so damn obnoxious that it will put all neurologists to shame – and they would want to retire from their chosen field !! – Ditched actress, the leading lady of this novel, who never forgot her lover (aurat apna pehela pyaar nahi bhola sakti) misses her lover and while healing him(husband) she murmurs in front of husband that she has always loved her puberty-hood lover !!Husband is heart broken – what do such actors and actresses expect I do not know !! they have the most rotten life style – playing around, jumping around, smooching around, in ripe old age ..getting married to girl ½ his age and then they expect true – blue love !! ridiculous !All fools I tell you.
